EA-RS installed solution provides vital fire protection for disabled tenant through a rapid-response misting system.
A 46-year-old resident of Walkergate faced serious fire risk due to mobility issues and health conditions. In partnership with Leazes Homes, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service worked with EA-RS to install a portable misting system in her living room, the space where she spends most of her time.
Connected to a smoke alarm and telecare alert, the system now offers the resident immediate fire suppression and emergency support, significantly improving her safety and peace of mind.
Clare Rabbetts, a 46-year-old resident of Walkergate, Newcastle, faces significant fire risk due to her mobility limitations and mental and physical health disabilities. Clare spends most of her time in her living room, which heightens her vulnerability. Recognizing her situation, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service partnered with social housing provider Leazes Homes to enhance her safety. The aim was to implement a fire suppression system tailored to her specific needs, offering her greater protection and peace of mind.
The team devised a plan to install a portable domestic misting system in Clare’s living room. This system operates similarly to a traditional sprinkler but is designed to protect a single room, making it ideal for Clare’s needs. The misting system is linked to a smoke alarm, which, upon detection of smoke, activates the system to spray a fine mist. This mist cools the smoke and suppresses the fire, creating a breathable atmosphere that buys crucial time for Clare to survive and for firefighters to conduct a rescue.
Additionally, the misting system is connected to Your Homes Newcastle’s telecare service. This connection ensures that when the system is triggered, an immediate signal is sent to the onsite warden, who then contacts emergency services. This swift response mechanism is vital for ensuring Clare’s safety and timely rescue.
The installation of the portable misting system in Clare’s home has significantly improved her safety and peace of mind. Clare expressed her relief, saying, “It’s nice to know I’ve got that little bit more protection to help me keep safe.” District Manager Peter Iveson from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that despite previous safety measures, Clare remained at high risk. The new system offers enhanced protection tailored to her specific circumstances.
Bill Midgley, Chair of Leazes Homes, highlighted the broader implications of this initiative. He expressed the organisation’s commitment to providing high-quality, affordable accommodation and enhancing safety for vulnerable residents. The success of Clare’s misting system installation serves as a model for future safety upgrades, with plans to fit sprinkler systems in all supported accommodation bungalows to protect more at-risk individuals.
Vice Chair of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority, Nick Forbes, reiterated the value of such partnerships. He explained that while smoke alarms provide early warnings, misting and sprinkler systems prevent fire spread and offer vital survival time.
