A pioneering fire safety initiative led to the installation of Derbyshire’s first portable misting system, protecting a high-risk resident in Long Eaton.

In 2012, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service identified a vulnerable resident in Long Eaton who was at heightened risk during a Home Fire Safety Check. In collaboration with Derbyshire County Council Adult Care and the resident’s family, a portable misting system, the first of its kind in the county was installed to provide fast-acting fire protection.
The system later activated during a small bin fire, successfully extinguishing the flames before they could spread. This outcome highlighted the importance of proactive fire safety for at-risk individuals and supported the wider push for domestic fires suppressions solutions.
In 2012, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service identified a vulnerable
resident in Long Eaton during a Home Fire Safety Check. The
assessment revealed that the occupant was at a heightened risk of
fire, necessitating additional protective measures. The service, in
collaboration with Derbyshire County Council Adult Care and the
resident’s family, aimed to enhance fire safety for the resident by
installing a portable misting system, the first of its kind in Derbyshire.
To address the identified fire risk, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service,
working closely with the resident’s family and with funding support
from Derbyshire County Council Adult Care, installed a portable
misting system in the Long Eaton property. This system was
specifically chosen for its ability to quickly detect and extinguish fires,
offering an immediate response that would safeguard the vulnerable
occupant. The installation was part of a broader initiative led by Chief
Fire Officer Sean Frayne to advocate for domestic sprinklers in all new
homes and to protect those most at risk through strategic
collaborations.
On a callout at 16:25 hours, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service
responded to an activation of the portable misting system at the Long
Eaton residence. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed that the system
had successfully extinguished a small bin fire, preventing it from
escalating. The occupant was taken to the hospital for precautionary
checks and was unharmed. The successful deployment of the misting
system validated its effectiveness and underscored the importance of
targeted fire safety measures for vulnerable individuals. This case also
reinforced the ongoing campaign for wider adoption of fire
suppression systems in homes, especially for those most at risk.
