These vulnerable residents were protected from life-threatening fire thanks to the rapid activation of UltraGuard Misting Systems.
As par of the ”Think Sprinkler” campaign, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service installed 37 misting systems in homes of high-risk individuals, including elderly residents and those with limited mobility. In three separate incidents, a rubbish bin fire, a bathroom blaze, and an unattended cooking accident, the misting systems activated instantly, extinguishing the flames before they could spread.
These real-life success highlight the vital UltraGuard systems play in safeguarding lives and underline the need for wider adoption in vulnerable households.
Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service identified a critical need to protect
vulnerable residents at heightened risk of fire-related injuries. Many of
these individuals, including the elderly and those with limited mobility, were at significant risk due to factors such as heavy smoking and poor mental health. The Service sought an effective fire safety solution that could be quickly deployed to safeguard these at-risk individuals within their homes. The initiative was part of the broader “Think Sprinkler” campaign, which aimed to install Portable Misting Systems (PMS) across Derbyshire homes since 2011.
To address the fire risks faced by vulnerable residents, Derbyshire Fire
& Rescue Service collaborated with local authorities and registered
social landlords to install 37 Portable Misting Systems (PMS) in homes
across Derbyshire. These systems were chosen for their ability to
detect and extinguish fires rapidly, providing immediate protection to
occupants. In particular, the Service focused on residents who were
identified as heavy smokers with poor mobility, ensuring that the PMS
units were strategically placed to cover high-risk areas within their
homes. The installations were part of the ongoing effort to fit
domestic sprinklers or misting systems into as many homes as
possible.
The effectiveness of the Portable Misting Systems was
demonstrated in three separate incidents, all within a short span
of time.
Incident 1: A PMS installed in the home of a 91-year-old heavy smoker in Sandiacre extinguished a fire that started in a rubbish bin next to the occupant’s chair, likely saving her life.
Incident 2: Another PMS activated in the home of a 93-year old woman in Doveridge after a small bathroom fire began. The system not only suppressed but completely extinguished the fire before it could spread.
Incident 3: A 68-year-old man’s home in Derby was saved when his unattended cooking ignited, but the PMS quickly extinguished the fire before it could cause significant damage. In each case, the PMS proved crucial in preventing potential tragedies.
The success of these installations reinforced the importance of Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service’s commitment to protecting vulnerable residents and validated the ongoing “Think Sprinkler” campaign. These incidents highlighted the lifesaving impact of Portable Misting Systems, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to equip more homes with these vital safety
systems.
