Midland Heart required a modern upgrade to improve resident comfort and energy efficiency across its housing scheme.
While upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting was a key objective, the project required more than a simple product swap. The unique layout of the houses presented a specific challenge: Kitchen windows directly faced corridor areas, which meant that conventional lighting solutions with integrated sensors could be easily triggered by routine activity inside the resident’s homes.
This is not only risked unnecessary energy use but could also affect the comfort and experience of those living in the building.
A smarter, more responsive solution was needed, one that could adapt to the environment while remaining sensitive to the needs of the residents.
Midland Heart sought an innovative LED lighting upgrade to support the needs of the residents. Due to the configuration of the flats, the team was challenged to find a solution that would not activate corridor lighting when residents entered their kitchens, as their kitchen windows faced the corridors. The traditional specification of utilising fittings within the corridors with integrated microwave sensors would need revising.
EA-RS proposed a solution using a Hytronik modular wiring system and an intelligent programmable Bluetooth PIR switching system.
This system allowed for easy adjustments via an app, offering custom detection ranges, hold times, dimming levels, and daylight sensing. The solution ensured optimum energy efficiency and maximised the longevity of the fittings.
Specifically, the system met the client’s requirements for dimming down to 10% output, not turning off, and ramping up to 100% output when movement is detected, with a hold time of 2 minutes.
The implemented solution resulted in a successful installation, addressing the unique challenge presented by the configuration of the flats and resident preferences.
Moreover, it significantly contributed to sustainability by optimising energy efficiency, and offered potential cost savings through tailored functionality.
