Mist System Prevents Fire Death

EA-RS installed UltraGuard unit extinguishes fire in seconds, safeguarding an 86-year-old with limited mobility.

In partnership with Northamptonshire County Council’s Dementia Care Team, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service installed an UltraGuard mist systems in the home of vulnerable 86-year-old smoker. When discarded smoking materials ignited nearby newspapers, the system activated instantly, suppressing the fire before it could spread.

The resident suffered only minor smoke inhalation and returned home within hours, underscoring the critical role of misting systems in protecting those most at risk.

1. The challenge

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) identified an 86-
year-old resident in Wellingborough as being at extremely high risk
due to immobility and heavy smoking. Living alone, the resident was
particularly vulnerable to fire-related incidents. NFRS, in partnership
with the Dementia Care Team of Northamptonshire County Council
(NCC), sought a proactive solution to safeguard the resident by
addressing these heightened risks.

2. Our solution

In May 2012, NFRS collaborated with Ultra Surefire to install an
UltraGuard water mist system in the resident’s home. This system was
chosen for its ability to rapidly detect and extinguish fires, offering
continuous protection. The UltraGuard system was designed to
activate upon detection of a fire, using an interlinked smoke detector
to trigger the release of a fine water mist that would suppress and
extinguish the fire before it could escalate. This solution was tailored
to ensure the safety of the resident by providing immediate fire
suppression, reducing the risk of injury or death in the event of a fire.

3. Results

On the evening of October 26th, 2012, the UltraGuard system was put to
the test when a fire broke out in the resident’s home, caused by discarded
smoking materials igniting nearby newspapers. The system activated
within seconds, fully extinguishing the fire before the arrival of NFRS. As a
result, the resident avoided any burns and suffered only minor smoke
inhalation, which was treated on-site by paramedics. The room was quickly
dried out, and the UltraGuard unit was recharged, allowing the resident to
safely return home just hours after the incident. This successful
intervention demonstrated the life-saving capability of the UltraGuard
system, reinforcing its value as a critical protective measure for vulnerable
individuals.
