UltraGuard Saves Staffordshire Resident

EA-RS installed fire system activates before emergency crews arrive, limiting injury and saving a life.

A fire broke out in a Staffordshire home, injuring a resident with reduced mobility. Thanks to the UltraGuard Personal Protection System installed and maintained by EA-RS, the blaze was fully extinguished before firefighters arrived.

This quick suppression was prevented a much more serious outcome and highlights the critical role EA-RS plays in delivering life-saving fire protection for high-risk individuals.

1. The challenge

In the early hours of Thursday, May 9, a fire broke out in a house on Haig Close, Staffordshire. The resident, who had reduced mobility, was found injured in the kitchen by firefighters from Cannock and Chase Terrace. He had suffered burns to his left shoulder and chest and was subsequently taken to Royal Stoke Hospital, awaiting further treatment in Birmingham. The fire, which started in the living room, had been extinguished by the home’s Personal Protection System UltraGuard before the fire service arrived. The incident underscored the resident’s high risk due to factors identified in the SAME campaign: smoking, alcohol, mobility issues, and age.

2. Our solution

Given the resident’s high-risk profile, Prevent Officers had been visiting the home since 2012, collaborating with various partners to ensure his safety. As part of the care plan, a Personal Protection System UltraGuard was installed in his home. This system, designed to activate in the presence of fire, had successfully extinguished the blaze before it could cause more severe harm. The fire originated when the resident fell asleep while smoking on the sofa, causing a cigarette to ignite a nearby pillow and spread to his clothing.

3. Results

The swift response and the effectiveness of the installed Personal
Protection System UltraGuard played a crucial role in preventing a
more tragic outcome. Despite the resident suffering burns, the
system’s activation ensured the fire was quickly contained, allowing
firefighters to rescue him and medical personnel to provide
immediate care.

Station Manager Simon Craythorn highlighted the success of the
preventive measures, noting that the system’s performance likely
saved the resident from more severe injuries or death. This incident
emphasises the importance of tailored fire safety solutions for highrisk
individuals and validates the ongoing efforts of fire services and
their partners in implementing comprehensive care plans to protect
vulnerable community members.
